Chalayan Paris Fashion Week Spring Summer 2016:"Celebration"
IT was a recent trip to Cuba that inspired Hussein Chalayan’s spring/summer 2016 collection, where he was encouraged to explore the culture that culminated in today’s celebration – a word that has dominated the collections so far in Paris.
"I wanted to fuse the colonial elements with the tropical elements of Cuba to create a celebration of the place because why should these places be validated by Western values? Why should it be that if they don’t abide to what everyone else is doing then they shouldn’t be respected? It was an amazing trip."
The show-stopping party piece came at the mid-way point, when two models were drenched under showers, their specially formulated tissue lab coats melting away to reveal sparkling Tango-tastic gowns.
"I had the idea of using water, because of course Cuba is surrounded by the sea and I like the idea of representing a military invasion as something playful - that it could melt and reveal something playful underneath." It resulted in a collection that showed it was a holiday well spent.
